THE ARTIST

MERCEDES FLORRES TORRES
Who Am I
I am an acrylic paint artist who grew up in Mexico City and eventually settled in Copenhagen, Denmark, after living in three different countries. Though I hold the brush, my journey is not a solitary one—without the unwavering support of my husband, family, and friends, none of this would exist.
If death is a lonely soul, then life must be a team sport.
Growing up in an artsy neighborhood in Mexico City, my first encounter with art was at “El Bazar del Sábado” (The Bazaar of Saturday), a unique market that left a lasting impact on my use of color.
In school, I never thrived academically, yet I always found art classes too short and rarely had time to finish my projects.
The constant dangers of the city and family drama led to me being sent to a boarding school in Canada. This Canadian boarding school finally gave me more time to focus on art, leading to my first award for artistic talent.
Life after moving away from Canada was deeply entangled with teenage love, which eventually brought me from sunny California to Copenhagen, where I finally put down roots. After landing in Copenhagen, I put my artistic pursuits on hold while trying to succeed as a dietitian, and part time dancer. But meeting my husband reignited my passion for painting. He was the first to display my art because he genuinely wanted to see it every day. So, at 25, after nearly a decade of not painting, I picked up the brush again.
In my culture, death is ever-present, from the “Día de los Muertos” celebration to ancient Aztec traditions. Painting skulls feels as natural to me as breathing; it’s a way of making the inevitable both beautiful and familiar.
Meaning Behind My Art
Most of my paintings are stories, a commemoration of valuable pop-culture experiences, but all of them carry a wish. A desire for proof of the afterlife—a wish that I may never be granted, and something beyond my control.
In the absence of certainty, one can either freeze or embark on a journey with a ticket of faith, trusting that the uncertain path will lead to sanctuary. It’s about moving forward, hoping to find a connecting passage rather than a final destination.

Death is indifferent to what happens to us, yet I think about it every single day. Creating art has been part of my healing process, a way for me to come to terms with my mortality without becoming paralyzed by it. I chose to embrace the journey of dying by making death beautiful, memorable, and joyful.
At its core, my art is about being playful—playful with the most uncharismatic playmate of them all. It’s about being playful with death.

Beyond death, there is also a desire for unity. What brings people together besides a funeral? A football match, a concert, a movie, a Da Vinci masterpiece—a moment captured in time that resonates across generations. What if we talked more about death in a playful way? How would you feel if someone told you, “When I die, I’m going to haunt Tarantino until he makes Pulp Fiction 2”?
